Four former Al-Shabaab militants surrendered to Somali authorities on Wednesday ( April 2, 2025.), citing unbearable airstrikes and the trauma of losing comrades in battle, regional officials confirmed.

The defectors, who operated in the Bay, Bakool, and Lower Jubba regions, turned themselves in to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Baidoa after months of attempting to escape the extremist group. Officials revealed that the men had participated in active combat, including a deadly clash in Buulo Xaaji, Jubbaland, where numerous Al-Shabaab fighters were killed.

"We Could No Longer Endure the Airstrikes"

Speaking anonymously, one of the ex-fighters described the relentless pressure of surviving government-led airstrikes. "Many of our friends died. We knew it was only a matter of time before we were next," he said. The defectors admitted they had long sought an escape but were trapped under the group’s brutal reprisals and surveillance.

Government Offensives Force Surrenders

The Somali National Army, supported by international partners including the U.S., has escalated ground operations and precision airstrikes against Al-Shabaab strongholds in southern and central Somalia. The sustained military pressure has reportedly triggered a growing wave of defections, with some militants seeking government amnesty.

Southwest State authorities confirmed that the four men will enter a rehabilitation program aimed at reintegrating former fighters through counseling, vocational training, and community support. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s recruitment networks.

Calls for More Defections

Government officials urged remaining Al-Shabaab fighters to surrender, emphasizing the availability of amnesty and rehabilitation. "Lay down your arms and embrace peace," a regional security official stated. "The government is ready to welcome those who abandon violence."

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group, has waged a brutal insurgency in Somalia for over 15 years. Despite losing significant territory, the group remains a persistent threat, launching frequent attacks in rural areas where its influence remains strong.

The latest surrenders highlight the increasing strain on the militant group as Somalia’s military campaign intensifies. Security analysts suggest that continued pressure could lead to further fractures within Al-Shabaab’s ranks.
